Each manufacturer insists on its own proprietary interface — often using standard protocols under the hood — but packaged in a way that limits interoperability. ENET, CAN, and UDS-over-Ethernet implementations are technically approachable, yet deliberately siloed.Our mission was to change that, without compromising reliability or compliance.The Core IdeaWe envisioned a single, adaptable interface — a device that could:<ul><li>Speak the native protocols of modern ECUs (CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, K-Line, ENET, UDS),</li><li>Present itself as a compliant transport layer to existing dealer or third-party tools,</li><li>Run on low-cost, modular hardware like the ESP32, STM32, or Arduino-based controllers,</li><li>And serve as an open hardware platform that the community can expand.</li></ul>The philosophy is simple: If you can flash, code, or diagnose a vehicle using OEM tools — you should be able to do it through one universal, affordable interface.The Hardware ArchitectureOur prototype design uses a hybrid hardware stack:<ul><li>ESP32 as the main controller — chosen for its dual-core performance, integrated Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, and USB/UART bridge capability.</li><li>Modular transceiver layer, incorporating:<ul><li>MCP2551/2562 for CAN/CAN-FD,</li><li>TJA1020 for LIN,</li><li>and an isolated Ethernet PHY for ENET and UDS-over-Ethernet protocols.</li></ul></li><li>Configurable power conditioning for 12V/24V vehicle systems, with protection against transient spikes and reverse polarity.</li></ul>This modular approach allows end-users and OEMs alike to tailor the hardware to their workflow — whether that’s bench testing, mobile diagnostics, or ECU reflashing in-field.Firmware &amp; Protocol HandlingThe firmware is built around modular protocol drivers, allowing each physical interface to be abstracted under a unified API.At a glance:<ul><li>CAN / CAN-FD Stack: Implements ISO-TP for multi-frame messaging and supports timing-critical flashing sequences used in UDS and KWP2000.</li><li>ENET / UDS-over-Ethernet: A lightweight TCP/UDP bridge handles session segmentation and retransmission timing to emulate OEM-grade interfaces such as BMW’s ENET or Mercedes’ DoIP implementations.</li><li>Passthrough Mode: A dedicated bridge layer mimics J2534-style communication, so that OEM software (dealer tools, flashers, and diagnostics) interacts seamlessly with our device as though it were the factory tool.</li><li>Security Layer: Includes optional signing and verification routines to prevent unauthorized firmware deployment or ECU access.</li></ul>This modular firmware design means new manufacturers, transport layers, or diagnostic stacks can be added without changing the core system — simply by loading or compiling a new protocol module.The Journey: From Bench Concept to Working PrototypeThe project started as a breadboard proof-of-concept on an ESP32-DevKit and a pair of MCP2551 chips. We achieved initial success with standard OBD-II and CAN frames, then quickly moved to more advanced targets like ECU flashing sequences requiring precise timing and stable voltage.Once CAN and K-Line were stable, we tackled ENET/UDS-over-Ethernet — a turning point. Implementing dynamic IP configuration, transport segmentation, and high-speed packet streaming proved essential for OEM software compatibility. When the prototype successfully performed a full flash through dealer-level tooling, we knew the concept had crossed from theory to practicality.Subsequent iterations refined isolation, shielding, and firmware modularity — and today, the prototype stands as a compact, multi-protocol interface capable of bridging nearly any ECU communication standard.Toward Open Hardware Automotive ToolsOur long-term goal isn’t to replace OEM systems — it’s to unify them.
